The Problem

Refresh cycles are where the real money leaks out

Enterprise buyers compare phones and tablets on unit price, then get surprised three years later when a third of the fleet needs replacing early. Android's total cost problem isn't the hardware — it's the churn. Most Android OEMs still cap security patch support at two to four years, forcing IT to refresh or accept unpatched devices on the network well before the hardware itself is worn out.2 That said, the gap is narrowing at the top of the market: Google now commits to seven years of updates on newer Pixel devices, and select 2025 Samsung flagships carry similar commitments — a meaningful shift if it holds across future device generations.2

Device reliability compounds the problem. Independent lifecycle data puts Android's annual failure rate at 12% to 18%, compared with roughly 3% for iOS devices — a gap that shows up directly in support tickets, loaner-device logistics, and unplanned downtime across a distributed fleet.4

More recent smartphone resale data reinforces the same curve at the 12-month mark: after one year, the average Android phone retains only about 43% of its original value, compared to roughly 69% for a comparable iPhone. Even top Android flagships depreciate around twice as fast as iPhones at a similar price point, largely because hundreds of Android OEM models compete for the same resale buyers while Apple ships only a handful of new models a year.5
